Childrens Summer Activitiy Scheme 2012

During the structured holiday activity scheme, we provide sporting activities such as football, cricket, rounder’s etc. We plan a daily arts and craft programme and teach new skills, sewing, knitting, mosaics, paper craft, clay modelling, cooking and more. Local community volunteers work with artists and sports coaches to learn new skills and enhance their educational attainment. We promote intergenerational activities by inviting parents and grandparents to participate in the activities.

Having some of the worst deprivation in the UK and the third highest child poverty in West Sussex, children and young people are unable to access mainstream activities due to cost. In 2010 and 2011 Bognor CAN held a free of charge, holiday activity programme for four weeks that provided structured, learning experiences. Participation has also proved to help in the reduction of anti-social behaviour by local children and young people, by alleviating boredom and promoting positive teamwork.

Children and young people have the opportunity to show what they have achieved at our Community Town Show in September 2012. Volunteers learn new skills leading to possible further training and employment and sustainability of our activities. Parents and grandparents learn the skills to continue activities at home and enable their children and young people to continue with their activities and also promote family cohesion. Our activities aim to also reduce youth anti-social behaviour.
