Our history…how we got here

Town Show 2011 - 16Bognor CAN is a registered charity whose aim is to support children, young people, families and older people from the deprived areas of Bognor Regis. By offering a wide range of activities we aim to improve health and wellbeing, reduce anti-social behaviour, promote community cohesion, enhance educational attainment and reduce social isolation.

Bognor Community Action Network – Bognor CAN was created following the successful work of the Pevensey Project, which had been funded through the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) from 2004 to 2006 and was awarded a SEEDA ‘Highest Achievement Award’ for the West Sussex coastal strip.

As a result of the success of the Pevensey project and by request of the community and stakeholders, Bognor CAN was established in September 2006 and became a registered charity in December 2006.

The charity was developed provide opportunities through projects and activities to address issues faced by people of all ages from the disadvantaged communities across Bognor Regis, so they are able to participate more fully in society.

Our continued success over the past seven years has led to engaging with our beneficiaries to address need and design services that make an impact at grass-roots level.  We have gained a reputation and recognition for providing good quality, relevant activities that engage some of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable residents of all ages from across Bognor Regis.

  • Bognor Regis Town Council Award – ‘Contribution to Bognor Regis’
  • ‘Observer Newspaper Community Award’ – for best community project
  • Arun District Council – ‘Community Hero Award’.

Bognor CAN has had great success in encouraging volunteering through beneficiary involvement and there are large numbers of volunteers who engage with the organisation across its many activities.  Volunteer activities include organising external events and supporting operational activities.

Volunteers are also key in supporting the summer activities for children and young people and the annual events. All activities are led by volunteers who have participated in training through Bognor CAN, in addition to self-employed contracted individuals who are all CRB checked to an enhanced level.

Our community events act as a means to bring the community together to increase community cohesion, consult on what the community needs and involve residents of all ages in the organisation and its activities.

In September 2007 we delivered our first Community Town Show promoting health, community safety and the environment in addition to consulting with the community which guided the development of our organisation.  We have since held a Community Town Show each year.

Summer Activities 2012-0158From identifying gaps in free of charge or low cost services and responding to beneficiary need, we have planned, developed, delivered and sustained many activities with funding from a wide variety of funders.  From March 20010 to April 2013, our organisational core costs were covered by the Big Lottery ‘Reaching Communities’ – Bognor CAN – develop and thrive.

Our aim for the next three years is to secure funding for our organisations core costs to enable us to strengthen our organisation and continue to support people of all ages from the deprived wards of Bognor Regis.
